Effects of caffeic acid and thymoquinone on experimental colitis model
Aims: Ulcerative colitis is a type of inflammatory bowel disease that usually involves the large intestine and rectum. Caffeic acid (CA) and Thymoquinone (TQ) were found to be effective in suppressing the inflammation in Dextran Sulfate Sodium (DSS) induced experimental colitis model. We aim to investigate the beneficial effects of CA and TQ on colitis. Methods : 40 rats were divided into four groups as control, CA, TQ and CA+TQ 3% DSS was used to to achieve colitis. Myeloperoxidase (MPO), malonyl dialdehyde (MDA), interleukin 1ß (IL1ß), interleukin 6 (IL6) and intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) levels were measured in colonic tissue. p < 0.05 was accepted as statistically significant. Results: The levels of all inflammation parameters were significantly higher in control group when compared to other three groups, (p<0.005 for MPO, MDA, IL1ß, IL6 and ICAM-1). The levels of MPO, MDA, IL1ß and IL6 were higher in group CA (p<0.005). Conclusion: Our results demonstrated that while the anti-inflammatory effects of CA and TQ were similar when administrated seperately, co-administration of TQ+CA has a more potent effect than CA but have a similar effect with TQ. TQ has a more potent anti-inflammatory effect on the inflammation in DSS induced colitis than CA.
